AMX 
The Asset Management Exchange (“AMX”) is an independent institutional asset management marketplace designed to fundamentally transform institutional investment for the benefit of the end saver. The managed funds platform was launched earlier this year and already allows asset owners to invest more efficiently in hedge funds and smart beta allocations with third party managers.  This will be expanded across all asset classes over time. It is creating a smarter, easier and cheaper way to connect asset owners to those who manage their money.

AMX is a start-up business within a large corporate, meaning that the team is able to benefit from all of the advantages and resources of Willis Towers Watson, while rapidly developing its own value proposition for clients and its own brand.  The dedicated team has over 45 people, split across two locations at the moment London (UK) and Cork (Ireland).  Further geographic expansion is planned..

Assets on the platform have grown quickly and are approaching $2bn with continued rapid growth expected from the existing Willis Towers Watson client base. A critical selling point however is that AMX is open architecture – meaning that the exchange is not just for the use of existing Willis Towers Watson clients or approved investment managers.  The ambition is for AMX to set the market standard in terms of such platforms and for it to be widely used by institutional investors across the globe to access investment management strategies. This is where the role of the “Business Development Manager – US” will be critical by leading the charge in taking the AMX concept to the United States.

The Role

The end clients of AMX are institutional investors including pension funds, insurance companies, sovereign wealth funds, family offices, endowments and others. In order to have a range of investment products on the exchange for investors to choose from, AMX also needs to convince asset managers to offer their investment strategies via the exchange. Given the open architecture of the platform, in theory it could connect “any investor” with “any manager” but this is unrealistic in the short to medium-term.  A sequential roll-out targeting specific investor and manager groups is required.

 

At launch, the first target clients were UK based pension schemes and AMX connects them with hedge fund strategies.  Since then we have expanded both the range of geographies and client types targeted, as well as being in the process of moving beyond hedge funds.  Your primary goal is to develop and execute a business strategy for growing AMX in the United States. This will involve identifying suitable investor segments and investment management strategies as well as a value proposition and sales model.

 

The role is within the AMX Business Development team, reporting to the AMX Head of Business Development – a position currently filled by the Global Head of AMX.  Given the entrepreneurial nature of the business you will be working closely with the entire team.

Initial duties will include development of the strategy:

  • Client identification: segment the US institutional investment market identifying suitable target clients for AMX, working from high level segments into individual target lists

  • Manager identification: segment the range of available investment strategies with a view to matching the appropriate ones for the target clients above

  • Develop the messaging, pitch and commercials for the US market by being conscious of local requirements

  • Develop an appropriate resourcing strategy for a US business development team

Ongoing duties will include the execution of the strategy:

  • Establish and cultivate relationships with the target clients and managers, using the other members of the AMX team and wider Willis Towers Watson firm where appropriate

  • “Pitching” for business including the negotiation of appropriate terms

  • On-boarding any new relationships (or managing team members that do this activity)

Servicing any new relationships (or managing team members that do this activity)

  • A leader, who will engage and communicate effectively with senior business leaders, drawing on strong business acumen.
