The Business

Our Retirement consulting team combines expertise in retirement and investment consulting to support global organizations worldwide in designing, managing, administering and communicating all types of retirement plans.  Whether a client has a defined benefit pension or a defined contribution plan, we work with them to determine the right approach to design, funding, investing, governing and employee engagement that fits their specific goals.

Through the use of leading edge tools and research as well as sophisticated thinking, our team can build tailored solutions for clients that balance retirement program risks and costs with plan objectives and opportunities.

The Role

Client teams within Willis Towers Watson are supported by a network of five actuarial service centers across North America.  Given the size and complexity of our client portfolio, you will have the opportunity to support diverse projects related to funding and expense valuations for pension and welfare plans, forecasting, non-discrimination testing, experience studies, accounting for special events,  support for plan design and union negotiation projects, proxy statements, government forms, data reconciliations, responses to auditor’s requests, etc.

As an Analyst within the Actuarial Service Center, you will have the opportunity to enhance your core skills as well as your retirement plan knowledge by working on specific client teams preparing large complex client data, addressing questions, resolving data and plan issues and preparing client deliverables.  Using the most cutting edge tools and resources, you will work with industry leaders in retirement plan design and management. Over time, you will get opportunities to serve as a project manager on more complex assignments, lead internal meetings and mentor junior staff.

Performance Objectives:

Excellence

  • Non-discrimination testing
  • Prepare annual valuations of pension plans and retiree welfare plans
  • Respond to queries from consultants with respect to plan provisions and valuation results and resolve/escalate any problems or issues
  • Complete work in accordance with ERISA, FASB, GASB, Department of Labor, Pension Protection Act and other Government regulations
  • Plan design
  • Actuarial pricing to support client negotiations
  • Utilize detailed tasks and steps to produce quality projects
  • Complete actuarial valuations and prepare valuation reports for consulting offices
  • Complete analysis and reconciliations of plan participant data
  • Reconcile plan assets
  • Prepare government reporting forms
  • Prepare annual employee benefit statements

People

  • Build relationships internally and collaborate effectively on cross-functional teams
  • Demonstrate natural ease and effectiveness when dealing with associates in other Towers Watson offices

Clients

  • Work with Team Leader to ensure that each project is completed on time and meets quality standards
  • Respond to all requests and communications effectively and efficiently
  • Increase efficiency within client teams by identifying ways to improve processes

  • Meet chargeable hours targets
  • Contribute to profitability by completing budget spreadsheet, monitoring own time spent on project and maintaining accurate time records

Job Requirements

The Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree required, preferably in a program with heavy emphasis on mathematics
  • 3+ years’ experience with actuarial valuations
  • We are looking for candidates who are not interested in writing future actuarial exams.
  • Proven mathematical aptitude
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and PowerPoint)
  • Previous defined benefit pension experience required
  • Well organized and detail oriented, effective time management skills
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and a demonstrated ability to interact with colleagues at all levels
  • Strong analytical and integrative skills including the ability to draw conclusions and identify trends from data in a logical, systemic way
  • Ability to ask the right questions and seek help where appropriate, good problem solving
  • Strong client service orientation
  • Ability to apply newly acquired knowledge to future assignments
  • Ability to work both independently and on client teams
  • Sense of accountability and ability to display initiative in self development
